Urinary catheters are often used in patients who may have difficulty emptying their bladder, have urinary incontinence, or have urinary retention. There are multiple types of catheters including Intermittent catheters, Indwelling (or Foley) Catheters, and Suprapubic Catheters. Intermittent catheters are used for patients who only need a catheter for a short period after surgery. When the bladder empties it is important for the doctor to remove the catheter. Indwelling Catheters is a thin tube inserted into the urethra for long-term use. The catheter will drain the urine into a bag which is attached around the patient's leg or around the bed when used at night. Regardless of whether the patient has incontinence indwelling catheters are often used during medical procedures. Suprapubic Catheters is surgically implanted through a small cut made in the abdomen. If a patient requires a long-term catheterization they may require a suprapubic catheter.
