Antibiotics or antibacterials are medications that destroy or slow down the growth of bacteria. Discovered by Alexander Fleming, penicillin was the first antibiotic, and since then ampicillin, amoxicillin, and Benzylpenicilin are widely used today to treat a variety of infections. Antibiotics that are used on different kinds of bacteria are known as broad-spectrum antibiotics. Examples of a broad spectrum include ampicillin, amoxicillin, and ciprofloxacin. Antibiotics that target specific bacteria are known as narrow spectrum. Examples of narrow-spectrum antibiotics include azithromycin, clarithromycin, and clindamycin. Did you know the word "antibiotic" means "against life"?
