Hand sanitizer is a liquid used to decrease infectious agents on the hands without the need of water. They are a mixture of alcohol, water and glycerin. The alcohol kills germs by destroying the cell membrane and removes vital proteins from harmful bacteria. A sanitizer with at least a 60% alcohol concentration is best, but it is not a replacement for hand washing but it is a good alternative when washing isn't an option.
If hands are dirty soap and water is best. Not only does soap and water to get rid of the most germs and bacteria, it breaks up oils and removes dirt. A thorough washing is the best defense against the spread of germs. According to CDC, wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. When clean dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
